Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag claims Sofyan Amrabat can play in multiple positions
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Sofyan Amrabat is capable of playing in four different positions for the team.
The Moroccan international is yet to make his debut for the Red Devils after signing for the club on a season-long loan from Fiorentina.
Amrabat earned global acclaim after his brilliant performance in the 2022 World Cup that helped Morocco finish fourth in the tournament.
The 27-year-old possesses incredible stamina and energy, allowing him to cover ground for his team and apply pressure on opponents. He also has a strong ball-winning ability, skills to shield the ball in possession, and a variety of accurate passing ranges to build the play.
Ten Hag told the reporters(h/t Manchester Evening News) before Saturday’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford that Amrabat would not be in contention for the game. However, he emphasised the players’ versatility to play multiple roles at the club going forward. Ten Hag said:
“Not tomorrow, because he [Amrabat] is not available. But what we missed in our squad was behind Casemiro, another one, typical holding midfielder. So, with him, we have one. You see the overload on games, so we need a type. But also Amrabat can play alongside Casemiro, because he is also capable to play in a higher position on the pitch, also he can play as a wing-back or full-back.”
The Red Devils’ midfield displayed vulnerability in the opening games of the season before the international break. Most of these vulnerabilities stemmed from the absence of players with the energy to apply constant pressure on the opposition off the ball.
Despite being at the tail end of their prime years, the 31-year-old duo of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen played the majority of minutes in midfield for the team in the first four games. Both players bring unique qualities to the team. However, together, they lack the energy that a top club like United needs in midfield.

United fans are eagerly anticipating Amrabat’s debut, hoping that he can address the vulnerability in midfield and potentially turn the season around. The English giant currently occupies the 11th position in the Premier League standings after a disappointing start to the season.
