The Daily Mail (h/t The Mirror) reports that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is looking to add former Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi to his roster at Old Trafford. The Dutch manager is facing a crisis in his attacking depth with uncertainty surrounding wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho.

El Ghazi departed PSV Eindhoven as they mutually terminated his contract on September 4, 2023. In one season, he made 33 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing two assists for the Eredivisie side.

The closed transfer window restricts United to the free agent market. However, Ten Hag is well aware of El Ghazi’s talent, facing the 28-year-old forward while in charge of FC Utrecht. El Ghazi left Ajax Amsterdam in 2017, the same summer that Ten Hag arrived at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

United are facing a crisis in their attacking lineup due to controversies surrounding their two wingers, Antony and Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils granted Antony a leave of absence amid physical assault allegations against the Brazilian. Meanwhile, a public spat with the manager clouds Sancho’s future at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ten Hag currently has Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Rasmus Højlund, and Alejandro Garnacho to compete for starting attacking positions. 20-year-old Højlund deserves time to get settled while Garnacho has been used more as an impact substitute. Injuries or dips in form for any attacker could severely impact United’s season aspirations.

Ten Hag’s side will then travel to Munich for their Champions League group stage opener against Bayern Munich. The Red Devils would be hoping to put all the controversies and problems aside and focus on getting crucial results.

El Ghazi already has a lot of experience in the English Premier League, having played for Aston Villa and Everton in the competition. Signing an experienced forward as a backup without spending anything can temporarily fix the problem without any fear of risk. That is at least until the transfer window opens again.
