Everton midfielder Amadou Onana does not regret a failed move to Manchester United in the summer transfer window
Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, while speaking to Le Soir (h/t Manchester Evening News) admits that he does not rue a missed chance to move to Manchester United.
Onana emerged as one of the prime targets for United in the latter stages of the transfer window. However, the club went ahead with the signing of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina.
Now, post the completion of the transfer window and Belgium staying at Everton, he believes that although it was a great opportunity for him, he does not regret the fact that the move did not go through.
“It’s not at all a missed opportunity. Football is all about timing. You have to know how to seize opportunities when they present themselves.
I had changed clubs every summer transfer window in recent seasons, but sometimes you have to know how to slow down and be patient. Now I am fully focused on my task with Everton.”
Onana is one of the upcoming midfielders in the Premier League and has a physical presence not matched by many in the league.
However, United made the right call of going forward with the signing of Amrabat rather than Onana and it actually is a better move for the player as well.
As he describes, it was his first season in England and another season in the league would give him the much-needed experience to make the move to a bigger club.
On the other hand, United was crying out loud for a midfielder of Amrabat’s ilk, who is technically proficient enough to be the link between defence and attack.
Onana has many similar traits to Scott Mctominay, who is still at the club and is very well settled. In the case of Mctominay’s departure, a move for Onana would sound more enticing.

Coupled with the fact that Amrabat was certain to leave Fiorentina while with Everton, there was a possibility of the negotiations being dragged down.
In the end, the club made the right call of choosing Amrabat over Onana and United could go back again for the player next summer when he would have more experience and exposure to the Premier League.
