Mikael Silvestre urges Manchester United to snub their interest in Amadou Onana and put faith in Scott Mctominay
Ex-Manchester United star Mikael Silvestre, while speaking to Bettingexpert (h/t he Express) has urged the Manchester United manager to snub their interest in Everton midfielder Amadou Onana and stick with Scott Mctominay.
United are still in the market to sign a central midfielder before the transfer window closes and while there have been talks of interest in Everton’s Onana, no formal approach has yet been made.
Silvestre believes that United should not go for Onana and put some trust in Mctominay and says that the profiles of the two players are quite similar.
“I understand why, profile-wise, this is a player they are looking for. But when you have Scott McTominay, I don’t see what Onana will add to United if you want to step up and challenge for the title.
He’s not a player United should be chasing. Physically, he and McTominay (26) have the same profile, and it’s not an upgrade, so I don’t think it makes sense unless you’re looking for back-up.”
Silvestre is correct in his assessment that somehow the two players have many identical traits and hence there is not much point in signing Onana unless it is as a back-up.
Rather than a physical presence, we need a controller in the midfield who can defend and attack and at the same time has the composure to retain the ball.
For this reason, the signing of Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina makes too much sense which is why it is possible that we might not be able to do the deal.
There is speculated interest from Liverpool and while the player is waiting for United to agree a deal with Fiorentina, he would also not wait forever.
Hence, if we are really interested in the player, we need to engage in formal conversation right now and for the price that he is avaialble, it is a no-brainer deal.

Amrabat’s profile would instantly improve our game on the ball while he would provide the necessary cover off the ball. Hopefully, United are able to complete the deal in the coming week or else there is a huge chance of another club coming in to hijack the deal.
