Ben Foster slams Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana for Harry Maguire incident
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has slammed Andre Onana for his spat with Harry Maguire during the pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund.
The Red Devils took on the Bundesliga giants on 31 July at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. We ended up losing 3-2 as the Old Trafford side had a few lapses in concentration and looked disjointed in the second half.
However, one incident that stood out during the game was between our new Cameroonian shot-stopper and the former Leicester City defender. The 27-year-old seemed to reprimand the England international after a poor passage of play which saw the former Inter Milan star having to make two saves.
Speaking on The United Stand on YouTube (h/t Manchester Evening News), Foster, who spent five years on United’s books in the past, was none too pleased with what he saw from Onana.
“I saw that thing with Maguire and I didn’t like it one bit. I don’t think it’s necessary. I get it, you’re annoyed but it’s a pre-season friendly. You don’t need to go shouting and raving.
“I guarantee you, every player in any dressing room up and down the country will have seen that and gone ‘nah, that’s bang out of order.'”
In the ongoing transfer window, the Red Devils signed the Cameroonian. We needed a replacement for David de Gea after his contract expired at the end of June and turned to the 27-year-old.
Onana has prior experience of playing under Erik ten Hag and developed under the Dutch manager at Ajax Amsterdam. His qualities were on show for everyone to see at the Nerazzurri last season.
During the friendlies, the Cameroonian has had some impressive moments. However, there have also been some things to forget, like getting chipped from around the halfway line against Lens.
But mistakes are part of the game. The purpose of the pre-season is to get players back into match fitness and integrate new players into the team.

While Onana’s reaction to Maguire’s possible mistake might have been over the top, a lot has been made of it. The Cameroonian seems like a strong character and it is understandable that he vented his frustration.
For years now, United have arguably lacked vocal leaders in the team. The shot-stopper looks to be in that mould. Therefore, it was an encouraging sign to see from one of our players on the pitch.
