Mikael Silvestre believes Manchester United did the right thing in stripping Harry Maguire of the club captaincy

Former Manchester United player Mikael Silvestre, while speaking to bettingexpert.com (h/t the Sun) believes Manchester United made the right decision in stripping Harry Maguire of the club captaincy and instead naming Bruno Fernandes as the club captain.

Maguire had been the club’s captain since his move from Leicester City and while he was a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, the appointment of Erik Ten Hag saw reduced game-time for the player.

Ten Hag preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first choice centre back pairing while the likes of Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw were preferred in times of injury crisis.

Maguire rarely played a game for United last season whilst still being the de facto club captain and Silvestre believes Ten Hag was right in changing captains which would set a tone for the standards needed at the club.

“A captain should be a leader on the pitch through performances. That’s the most important part. Maguire wasn’t a regular starter for Man Utd last season and his level has dropped. It’s just normal to give the captain’s armband to a player that can carry the team on the pitch. Ten Hag has sent a message now showing the standards that you need to have to be captain.”

Ten Hag, since his appointment, has stressed the importance of standards and character in the dressing room which differentiate a good team from a top team.

Fernandes, on the other hand, is the complete opposite player in terms of leadership and demanding standards around him and is a better choice as the captain for the club going forward.

For Maguire, it seems like his time at the club might be coming to an end. He has lost his place in the squad, lost his confidence and more importantly, lost the support of the fanbase.

It is imperative that for him to revive his career, he needs to move away from Old Trafford and all the noise and start afresh in a new environment.

West Ham United and Everton have been linked with the player and while he has consistently been berated for his below-par performances, there is still a good player in there and maybe a change of clubs would do him the world of good.

Ten Hag is ready to be built on a successful first season at United and as has been seen before with Cristiano Ronaldo and recently David De Gea, he is ruthless and relentless in his approach and will not stop until all the objectives are met.
