Burnley keen to strengthen their defence by adding Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez
According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Burnley are actively looking to strengthen their left-sided full-back position during the current transfer window. The Daily Mail claim that this would be a loan move.
Their manager, Vincent Kompany, is determined to add depth to the left-back role and has identified Manchester United’s young prospect, Alvaro Fernandez, as a potential target for the position.
Fernandez, who started his youth career at Real Madrid, made a move to United in 2020. Despite progressing well and being part of the first team, he has yet to make his official debut.
Last season, the 20-year-old was loaned out to Preston North End, where he impressed with his performances. He showed promise as he participated in 42 appearances for his loan club.
After his loan spell at Preston North End, the Spaniard has now returned to Old Trafford for their pre-season tour in the USA.
The young full-back has been showcasing his abilities and has caught attention with his impressive performances. During a match against Wrexham, Fernandez even provided an assist, adding to his promising displays during the tour.
Despite his impressive performances, he is not expected to receive significant game time at Man United.
Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, making it challenging for the youngster to secure a regular place in the first team.
Burnley are keen on securing the player’s signature as they need a left-sided full-back following the departure of last season’s loanee Ian Maatsen, who has returned to Chelsea.
The Clarets see the United defender as a valuable addition to bolster the squad for their Premier League campaign after their impressive promotion from the Championship last season.
The United star’s potential arrival is expected to strengthen Burnley’s chances in the league. However, it remains to be seen if they can successfully negotiate a loan move with Man United for their prized asset.
United have adopted a smart strategy with their academy graduates, as seen with the permanent transfers of Ethan Laird and Zidane Iqbal, where they included significant sell-on and buy-back clauses in the deals.
This approach may be applied to Fernandez as well if they consider selling him in the future. For now, a loan move to Burnley could be beneficial for both parties.
