According to the Independent‘s journalist Miguel Delaney [subscription required] (h/t the Express), Dutch outfit Ajax are looking to sign Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek on a loan deal in this ongoing transfer window.

Van de Beek was expected to excel as one of Europe’s top box-to-box midfielders at United following his £35 million move from Ajax in September 2020. However, he has struggled to live up to those expectations and has remained in the shadows at the club.

Even with Erik ten Hag, who previously managed him at the Johan Cruyff Arena, his situation has not improved, contrary to hopes that a reunion could reignite his form at United during the last season.

During his three-year stint with Man United, the 26-year-old midfielder has managed to score only two goals and provide two assists in 60 games.

It is evident that he has faced difficulties adapting to English football, and it might be the right moment for him to seek a fresh challenge elsewhere in order to revive his struggling career.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that Ajax are exploring the opportunity to sign the player on loan in order to provide him with a chance to get back to his best form at his former club.

However, these are just the initial phases of these rumours, and the player’s parent club has not received any official bid from the Eredivisie outfit.

Meanwhile, Spanish club Real Sociedad have been the front-runners in the race to sign Van de Beek. Although La Real are also interested in a loan deal, they have been locked in talks with United for the past few weeks.

It remains to be seen whether the Champions League club is prepared to make a significant financial commitment, especially after the departure of key player David Silva, who retired due to a serious knee injury at the age of 37.

Silva’s absence has created a vacancy in the attacking midfield position, offering Van de Beek a promising opportunity to rejuvenate his career in the coming season. The same can’t be said at Ajax, since they have a number of midfielders to fill in the spot.

The 36-times Dutch champions have Kenneth Taylor, Steven Berghuis and Mohammed Kudus to fill in the attacking midfielder spot.

The Red Devils are open to letting go of the midfielder on their own terms. Any interested club would need to accept United’s loan obligations if they want to secure a deal this summer.

We believe that, for his own progress, the Dutch star should consider moving away from Old Trafford. Given the intense competition for positions at the club, it’s unlikely he’ll secure a regular starting spot.

Bruno Fernandes is firmly established in the attacking midfield role, and Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen are regulars for the number eight position.

We believe that a transfer to the La Liga side makes more sense for the experienced player. A move to Sociedad could offer Van de Beek the opportunity for guaranteed playing time, particularly in the number 10 role.

With Silva’s retirement, the path is now clear for him to make that position his own at the Spanish club. It remains to be seen whether the No. 34 gets his chance to prove himself outside the Premier League next season.
