The Urawa Reds shot-stopper has decided to snub Old Trafford in favour of superior playing time
According to Japanese outlet Sponichi, Urawa Reds goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has rejected an offer from Manchester United amid concerns about regular playing time.
Suzuki, 20, was recently identified as a backup goalkeeper option for the Red Devils as they aim to rebuild their goalkeeping department following the departure of David de Gea and the anticipated exit of Dean Henderson.
Erik ten Hag successfully acquired Andre Onana as his main goalkeeper, who is now part of the pre-season tour with the team.
However, with Tom Heaton attracting interest from various clubs, including Everton and Luton Town, and Matej Kovar expected to go out on loan again, Man United are keen to have additional cover in the goalkeeper position.
United were ready to activate Suzuki’s £5 million release clause, and there were no issues with agreeing on personal terms.
However, according to Sponichi, it appears that the 20-year-old is likely to stay with the Urawa Reds and not make the move to Old Trafford this summer.
It is understood that due to the upcoming Paris Olympics next summer, the Japan U21 star has chosen to prioritise playing time at his current club in the J1 League over a potential move to United.
Currently, Ten Hag already has four senior goalkeepers following the arrival of Onana. Many fans were excited about the prospect of Suzuki joining the club.
However, it should be accepted that if the young keeper had joined United, he would likely have served as Onana’s understudy this season, limiting his opportunities for regular first-team minutes.
It seems like a logical move from the player’s perspective. However, it would be a minor setback in United’s transfer plans, as they now need to pursue other alternative options in the market.
Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow and Fenerbahce’s Altay Bayindir are also being targeted by the club. While the former has held talks with United, the latter could be available for a similar fee as Suzuki.
Any transfer move may ultimately be dependent on Henderson’s current status at the club. United could sign a new backup keeper if they acquire a decent fee for the English shot-stopper.

In our opinion, it’s time for the club to move on from the De Gea-Henderson pairing and switch to a completely new goalkeeping unit ahead of the upcoming season.
Manager Erik ten Hag could be able to rotate his players effectively if he has strong backup options in his squad.
