Erik ten Hag reveals Manchester United have made “progress” in striker search

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that the club have made “progress” in their search for a new striker in the ongoing transfer window.

As things stand, Ramsus Hojlund of Atalanta is the Red Devils’ top priority to bolster the attack this summer. However, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side will be able to acquire the Denmark international’s services in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag acknowledged United’s struggles to find the back of the net on a consistent basis. To that end, the gaffer wants other players to step up as well.

“We make progress, yeah, but we know how it works and when we have him, we will tell you directly. We are underperforming [at goalscoring] and we are aware of it. Others also have to contribute in that area and therefore, also we are looking for goalscoring capabilities.”

In the recent pre-season fixtures, Jadon Sancho has been deployed in the number nine position. The English national has done relatively well. He scored a goal in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Arsenal in New Jersey on 22 July.

For the time being, the Dutch manager has had to rely on the former Borussia Dortmund star. The only natural option at the former Ajax Amsterdam head coach’s disposal for the number nine position at the moment is Anthony Martial.

Unfortunately, the French national has been injury prone under Ten Hag. In the 2022/23 term, the 27-year-old was on the sidelines for most of the season.

As a result, United signed Wout Weghorst on loan in January to provide cover up front. Unfortunately, the Holland national was unable to do much and left a lot to be desired.

Thankfully, Marcus Rashford stepped up to the plate in the previous campaign and consistently scored goals for us last season. However, we seemingly cannot solely rely on the 25-year-old for another year.

Therefore, the Old Trafford side evidently need to add more firepower in the attack. However, will the Red Devils manage to get a hold of a quality striker before the end of the transfer window? Only time will tell.
