West Ham United set to test resolve of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire
Premier League rivals West Ham United are set to test the resolve of Harry Maguire to stay at Manchester United this summer, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required).
The Hammers are set to target the England international now that they have sold Declan Rice to Arsenal for a record £105 million. With the influx of cash, the Irons are now eyeing the Red Devils’ captain.
As things stand, the 30-year-old is high on the shortlist for David Moyes. However, instead of a permanent deal for the centre-back, the East London-based club would prefer a loan move for him.
Man United signed Maguire in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. Subsequently, the English national was handed the armband after a few months at the club. He was pivotal to our plans.
However, in recent months, the defender has struggled to perform well and has been guilty of making several errors. With the arrival of Erik ten hag in the Red Devils’ dugout, the 30-year-old has lost his place in the team.
West Ham have the likes of Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Nayef Aguerd in their ranks. Maguire is arguably an upgrade on most of Moyes’ current options at the back. The English national also has vast European experience, which could seemingly come in handy as the Irons will play in the Europa League.
At Man United, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were the gaffer’s preferred defenders last season. The two World Cup winners formed a solid partnership during the Dutch manager’s first year in charge of the Old Trafford side.
Victor Lindelof also played as a backup ahead of Maguire in the previous campaign. As a result, our skipper has fallen very down in the pecking order.

Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see the English national leave the club this summer. Whether West Ham will be able to acquire the 30-year-old’s services remains to be seen.
