Harry Maguire salary rise makes Manchester United summer transfer difficult
Manchester United are having difficulty parting ways with Harry Maguire this summer due to his salary increase, according to The Guardian.
Having qualified for the Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League table last season, every member of the Red Devils’ squad has been rewarded with a wage rise.
As things stand, the England international and Erik ten Hag are both open to the idea of the defender being sold in the ongoing transfer window. However, it remains to be seen whether the centre-back’s salary demands will be met elsewhere.
At the moment, the Old Trafford side are looking to raise funds to bolster the squad. The Dutch manager wants to add a new goalkeeper and a number nine to the ranks in the coming weeks.
United signed Maguire in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. Subsequently, the defender established himself as a key player at the Old Trafford side.
However, over the last few months, the 30-year-old’s form has declined. The centre-back has looked uncomfortable playing at the back for the Red Devils.
As a result, with the arrival of Ten Hag, the English national lost his place in the starting lineup. The gaffer preferred the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the previous campaign.
Victor Lindelof also got the opportunity to feature in the absence of the Argentine World Cup winner. However, Maguire was left on the bench on most occasions. At times, the Dutch manager opted to play Luke Shaw as a centre-back in place of the former Leicester star.
