AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho keen to take Manchester United star Mason Greenwood on loan
According to the Sun, AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho is interested in securing the loan signing of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood for the 2023-24 season. As per the source, he has also made contact with the United Academy graduate, asking about his plans.
The English giants are said to be nearing the completion of their internal investigation into the case surrounding Greenwood’s arrest in early 2022.
The forward was initially detained on allegations of rape and assault, followed by additional charges of sexual assault and threats to kill.
However, all criminal charges against him have been dismissed, allowing the English teenager to resume his football career.
While it is unlikely that Greenwood will be directly reintegrated into Man United’s first team next season, the club appears reluctant to consider a permanent sale. Manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly strongly opposed to the idea of the 21-year-old departing on a permanent basis.
Hence, Greenwood’s potential loan departure seems to be the most probable outcome for this summer, attracting interest from several clubs closely monitoring his situation at Old Trafford.
As per the latest development by The Sun, Roma have emerged as a strong contender for his signature, with their head coach, Mourinho, expressing a keen desire for a reunion with the player he previously managed at Man United.
Mourinho has personally reached out to Greenwood and his father to discuss the possibility of a loan move to Roma for the upcoming season.
Greenwood, who is eager to get back to playing football, could be attracted by the offer to join Roma due to his strong bond with the manager.
After the charges against him were dropped, the 21-year-old was recently observed engaging in a private training session with his personal coach. Greenwood dedicated 90 minutes at a public sports facility to refining his ball control and shooting skills.
The young attacker still has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, and it is currently improbable that he will make a permanent departure from the club at this point.
And now, to hit back on the English media’s latest rumour, Italian outlet Laroma24 has rejected the claims of Greenwood having contact with Mourinho.
This comes as another twist in the club academy graduate’s status at Old Trafford. Although the rumour has been stated as false, it can’t be denied that United could consider loaning the striker to another club.
Mourinho shares a close connection with Greenwood. The manager would favour signing a new forward for the upcoming season as Tammy Abraham’s recovery from a long-term injury is expected to take until January.
This situation presents an ideal chance for Greenwood to rejuvenate his career and begin anew under the guidance of the Roma boss. It would also be beneficial for United, as a move away from the club will assist in resolving matters and provide clarity for the 21-year-old’s future path.

In our opinion, the Red Devils should make a decision regarding the academy graduate’s future as soon as possible. Greenwood has been a good player, and selling him won’t be a wise decision. Hence, loaning him out will carve another route for his comeback. Whether that is the ethical thing to do given the accusations against him is debatable.
