Denzel Dumfries does not close the door for an Inter Milan exit amidst Manchester United interest
Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries has not closed the door for a potential exit this summer amidst fresh links with Manchester United.
It is revealed that United boss Erik ten Hag is eyeing a squad overhaul this summer, with Dumfries as one of the transfer targets once again. The club has had a long-standing interest in the Netherlands international.
Dumfries played the majority of the 2022/23 season where Inter won a cup double and narrowly lost the Champions League final to Manchester City.
Here’s what the Dutchman said when asked about his state with Nerazzurri and what his future plans are (h/t Mirror):
“I’m very proud to play for this team. These last two years have been fantastic, and I’ve very proud whenever I’m driving to Appiano [Inter’s training ground]. However, modern football is very dynamic. Players come and go.”
The 27-year-old is a versatile defender who can play as a right-back or wing-back. He can also be used as a wide centre-back in a three.
The former PSV Eindhoven player assisted seven goals in 34 league appearances in the season. He had a great World Cup as well, chipping in with a few goals and making late runs into the opposition box while playing as a right wing-back.
It would be interesting to know the purpose behind this potential signing if ten Hag is interested in signing Dumfries.
As discussed above, although he can play as a fullback, he is being used as a wing-back both at Inter and the Netherlands.
Moreover, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, despite little creativity, has done well as a right-back in the recent past. Diogo Dalot recently signed a new deal and seems to be the first-choice right-back if everything is going well.

Hence, instead of trying to spend money on Dumfries, United can focus on bolstering other departments of the squad. Adding a number nine would make a lot of sense for starters.
