David de Gea ‘increasingly likely’ to leave Manchester United as free agent
Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea is ‘increasingly likely’ to part ways with the club at the end of his current contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The Spaniard’s existing deal with the Red Devils is set to expire in the coming weeks. As things stand, discussions remain open’ with the veteran goalkeeper ‘over a potential new contract’.
Erik ten Hag wants to keep a hold of the 32-year-old. But he is not guaranteed a starting spot going into next season. While there was roughly an agreement between the two parties over fresh terms, the situation is not optimistic at the moment.
United are still in talks with De Gea for now. However, the Manchester-based club are yet to present a concrete offer before the shot-stopper. But the Red Devils are hopeful of extending the Spaniard’s stay.
The veteran goalkeeper made his way to the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. Since then, the 32-year-old has been our first choice in between the sticks for the majority of the campaigns.
De Gea has retained his place in the starting lineup under Ten Hag. However, while the Spaniard has put in some impressive displays, there have been some moments to forget as well.
The shot-stopper does not look comfortable playing the Dutch manager’s style. As a result, in the 2022/23 season, the 32-year-old left a lot to be desired with his distribution.
However, the former Atletico star was seemingly the best option at the gaffer’s disposal in the previous term. Tom Heaton and Jack Butland were the other two goalkeeping options in our ranks. The former Aston Villa star and Nathan Bishop’s contracts have been extended for one more year.
