Manchester United star Christian Eriksen has backed his compatriot Rasmus Hojlund to move to the Old Trafford side from Atalanta.

The Red Devils have held discussions with the 20-year-old about a switch in the ongoing transfer window. As things stand, the youngster is an alternative if the Manchester-based club are unable to sign top target Harry Kane. To that end, we have not sent in a bid for the Danish national yet.

Speaking to Ekstra Bladet (h/t Manchester Evening News), Eriksen can envision Hojlund wearing the United shirt. However, the midfielder does not want to speculate where his compatriot’s future lies.

“I can see him [Hojlund] at Manchester United, but I haven’t recommended him to Erik ten Hag. He is a fantastic guy and a good player and has really developed brilliantly at Atalanta. What the club ends up doing, I will not be able to answer.”

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan playmaker is currently on international duty with the Atalanta star. Denmark drew 1-1 versus Northern Ireland in the 2024 Euro qualifiers on 16 June as the 31-year-old and the forward started.

Eriksen has surprised many with his displays at the Old Trafford side. Last season, the veteran midfielder became a key player in Erik ten Hag’s plans at the Red Devils. However, we could evidently do with some more quality in the engine room.

In the attack, United are seemingly light as well. The gaffer had Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst at his disposal as the only natural strikers for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

The French national was injury-prone and was unavailable for the majority of the Dutch manager’s first year in charge at the Manchester-based club. On the other hand, the Burnley loanee left a lot to be desired up front.

Hojlund is a young number nine with a lot of potential. The Danish national still has a long way to go in his career. However, the 20-year-old has already shown glimpses of his talent at Atalanta.

While not the finished article yet, Hojlund looks like a future star. But it will be interesting to see whether the Red Devils will pursue the youngster or look for a more established striker for now.
