Manchester United ‘willing’ to offer €100 million for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
Manchester United are ‘willing’ to offer €100 million to Barcelona to acquire the services of Frenkie de Jong next summer, according to Spanish outlet El Nacional.
Last summer, the Red Devils were pushing to get a hold of the Holland international’s signature. To that end, the Blaugrana were also open to the midfielder’s departure to free up some funds. But in the end, the 25-year-old opted to stay at the La Liga giants.
However, Erik ten Hag is still keen on De Jong. The Dutch manager wants to reunite with his former Ajax prodigy at the Old Trafford side in the upcoming transfer window.
While the Manchester-based club are still interested in the Holland international, the final say will once again be in his hands. As things stand, it does not look like the midfielder has any intention of leaving the Catalan outfit.
The 25-year-old developed under Ten Hag at Ajax. After impressing under the Dutch manager at the Eredivisie outfit, Barcelona came knocking for his signature.
At the Camp Nou side, with the arrival of Xavi in the dugout last season, De Jong was not the first name on the team sheet. However, the Holland international has become pivotal to the Blaugrana’s starting lineup in recent months.
United signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro last summer to bolster the middle of the park. While the two have been impressive, in the last few weeks, the two have been underperforming.
As a result, the Red Devils have succumbed to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League. Therefore, in order to challenge for major titles, we evidently need more quality in our engine room.
