Erik ten Hag praises Manchester United performance in the draw against Southampton

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has praised the Red Devils’ performance against Southampton and getting a draw after losing Casemiro.

The Brazil international made a rash tackle at around the half-hour mark. Initially, the 31-year-old was shown a yellow card by Anthony Taylor. However, after a VAR check, the former Real Madrid star was sent off.

Both teams had decent chances in the first half. The Saint looked lively, while the Old Trafford side were seemingly reeling from the after-effects of Casemiro’s red card.

After the break, it was the Saint Mary’s Stadium side who had the better chances initially. As the half progressed, the Red Devils got into the game and had a few decent efforts on goal.

We also had a few shouts for penalties. However, in the end, they were not given. At full-time, it felt like the Manchester-based club were lucky to get the point considering the quality of chances Theo Walcott had.

Speaking after the fixture on United’s official website, Ten Hag was happy with the team’s spirit and display, especially playing with one less player for the majority of the game. The gaffer felt we could have got the victory.

“Big compliment to the team, they showed big character. When you are a long time playing with 10 against 11, and we played on Thursday, once again the team is fit physically and mentally. It was a great performance by our lads and we could have won this game.”

The Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday (12 March) against Southampton came after our damaging loss to Liverpool last week. The Red Devils seemed to bounce back versus Real Betis in the Europa League.

Unfortunately, United were unable to get the three points against Ruben Selles’ team. It leaves us 16 points behind Arsenal, who are first. The chain pack of other teams in the race for the top four are also closing in on us.
