Spain ‘want’ Manchester United forward and Argentina U20 international Alejandro Garnacho to switch national allegiance
Spain ‘want’ Manchester United forward and Argentina U20 international Alejandro Garnacho to switch his national allegiance, according to the Mirror.
La Furia Roja would like to see the 18-year-old ditch the South American nation and become part of their future along with Barcelona stars Gavi and Pedri. The 2010 World Cup champions are looking to entice the Red Devils’ youngster with the promise of immediate caps.
Garnacho has dual nationality. The forward’s mother is Argentinian, while his father is Spanish. As a result, the youngster is eligible to play for both countries.
The 18-year-old spent all his life in Spain. He even played for La Furia Roja’s U18 team. However, he subsequently took up an offer to join Argentina’s U20 squad. The former Atletico Madrid star also got a call-up to the senior squad about a year ago but did not feature for them.
As a result, Garnacho is still eligible to play for Spain. But it remains to be seen whether he will decide to do so in the coming future.
The 18-year-old recently missed out on a call-up to La Albicelete’s 2022 World Cup squad. Lionel Scaloni’s team went on to lift the golden trophy in Qatar.
Garnacho was left disappointed with his snub. He started talks with officials of La Furia Roja. The Euro 2012 winners hope they can still persuade the 18-year-old to join their ranks.
The Argentine youngster has broken into United’s senior side in the current campaign. He initially struggled for opportunities. However, some clutch performances have established the 18-year-old in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
