Liverpool ‘lead’ Manchester United in race for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount
Premier League rivals Liverpool are leading Manchester United in the race to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard.
The 24-year-old’s current contract at the Blues expires in the summer of 2024. However, the England international has not yet agreed new terms with the Stamford Bridge side.
At the moment, the playmaker wants a salary that reflects his prominence at the West London club. However, Todd Boehly has been unwilling to that end.
While the new Chelsea owners have not met Mount’s wage demands, they also want to tie him down to a seven-year deal. If the midfielder does not put pen to paper soon, he could be sold next summer.
The England international made his way through the youth ranks at the Blues. As a result, the playmaker has a deep affection for his boyhood club. But at the moment, the 24-year-old’s desire to be a one-club player is being tested ‘to the limits’.
Considering Mount’s current situation, other top teams in the English top flight have been alerted. Apart from the Red Devils and Jurgen Klopp’s team, Manchester City are also monitoring the midfielder.
Erik ten Hag is aware of the England international’s abilities. The Dutch manager knows what the playmaker is capable of, having had to go up against the 24-year-old during his loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem in the 2017/18 season.
Mount has been a key player for the West London club over the years. But in recent weeks, Graham Potter has kept him out of the starting lineup. The Stamford Bridge side have an abundance of talent at their disposal after their spending spree in the last two transfer windows.

At the moment, the number 10 position at United is Bruno Fernandes’. However, the Chelsea playmaker is also capable of playing as a number eight. But will the Old Trafford side be able to pip Liverpool to the 24-year-old? It remains to be seen.
The Merseyside outfit evidently need a rebuild in the middle of the park, considering their ageing and underperforming midfield. Hopefully, Ten Hag can convince Mount to snub Klopp.
