Nemanja Vidic hails Manchester United duo Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez
Manchester United icon Nemanja Vidic has hailed the partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the Red Devils’ backline.
The France international made his way to the club in the summer of 2021 from Real Madrid, while the Argentine signed for the Old Trafford side last summer from Ajax. Under Erik ten Hag in Manchester, the two have been the preferred duo.
Speaking to The i (h/t Metro), Vidic, who spent eight years at United, was all praise for the two centre-backs at the club. The Serbian expected the two to get even better with time.
“Lisandro came just six months ago, so he did really well. He brings energy, he likes to defend. He seems like he’s enjoying playing in England. He was a great signing.
“Varane is an experienced player, he has a few issues with injuries but definitely I think there’s more to come from them. The more they play together the better the partnership will be.”
In his debut campaign at the Old Trafford side, Varane was unable to get a consistent run in the team. The 29-year-old suffered a few fitness issues and was in and out of the side.
While the French national brought some much-needed quality to our backline, overall, we struggled defensively last season. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were not secure enough.
Erik ten hag was appointed United manager at the end of the previous campaign. The Dutch manager reunited with Martinez in Manchester. Since then, the 25-year-old has been ever-present in the Red Devils’ starting lineup.
However, the centre-back had a shaky start to life at the Old Trafford side. Ten Hag lost the first two fixtures in the Premier League to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
But the setbacks led to the gaffer deciding on Varane and Martinez being key to his plans at United. However, it has also meant that Maguire has been relegated to the bench.

Rio Ferdinand and Vidic formed one of the most successful defensive partnerships in the Red Devils’ history. Hopefully, the French and Argentine duo are able to achieve a fraction of that during their time together in Manchester.
