Danny Murphy believes Harry Maguire has a “good future” away from Manchester United
Former Liverpool ace Danny Murphy believes Harry Maguire will have a “good future” away from Manchester United. The ex-midfielder wants the centre-back to leave the Red Devils.
The 29-year-old has lost his place in the Old Trafford side’s starting lineup this season. Erik ten Hag has preferred the partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the backline.
Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News), Murphy, who spent seven years at Liverpool during his playing career, has urged Maguire to look for a different club. The former England international feels the defender still has the qualities to be a key player elsewhere.
“No, but he has a good future somewhere else because he’s still a great talent. He’s got leadership qualities, he’s learnt at United. Yes, he’s had a little bad spell but a lot of it has been good.
“He’s done brilliantly on the international stage at big tournaments, he’s great on set-plays, he’s a good character.”
The 29-year-old signed for United in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. He was handed the captain’s armband after just a few months in Manchester.
Over the years, the England international has been a regular in the Red Devils’ defence. But in the previous campaign, the centre-back struggled and made some high-profile errors.
With Ten Hag’s appointment at the end of last season, Maguire has seen himself go down the pecking order. The 29-year-old started the first two games of the campaign. However, since the two losses, the defender has struggled.
Varane and Martinez have formed a solid partnership at the Old Trafford side. We now boast two World Cup-winning centre-backs after Argentina’s triumph in Qatar.
While Maguire has lost his place at United, he was exceptional for the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup. However, even after the defender’s decent showing under Gareth Southgate, Luke Shaw has played centre-back in recent fixtures with the former Leicester star on the bench.

The 29-year-old will no doubt hope to play a much more prominent role at the Old Trafford side. However, considering how this season has gone, it looks difficult for the England international to be as influential as before going forward.
