Eintracht Frankfurt chief claims they were offered former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer
Axel Hellmann, the CEO of Eintracht Frankfurt, has claimed that they were offered former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo in the recent transfer window.
Die Adler won the Europa League in the previous campaign. The 37-year-old wanted to leave the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2022 for Champions League football.
Speaking to DAZN via Daily Mail, Hellmann revealed that the Bundesliga outfit had the chance to bring the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to the club.
“He [Ronaldo] was even offered to us.”
Philip Holzer, chairman of Frankfurt’s supervisory board, also stated:
“I have the feeling he was offered to every Champions League club.”
Ronaldo did not have the best of campaigns under Erik ten Hag at United. Initially, he was lept out of the starting lineup by the Dutch manager. When the 37-year-old was given opportunities, he cut a frustrating figure on the pitch.
The former Real Madrid star returned to the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2021 from Juventus. He finished last season as the club’s leading goalscorer in all competitions.
Unfortunately, Ronaldo seemed to be missing his shooting boots this term. He only managed to find the back of the net three times for the Red Devils in all competitions in the current campaign.
The Portuguese also had a few unsavoury moments this season. After refusing to come on as a substitute for United against Tottenham, he walked down the tunnel before the full-time whistle. Consequently, the forward was suspended for the next game against Chelsea.
However, the 37-year-old was reintegrated back into the starting lineup by Ten Hag after the draw at Stamford Bridge. However, his controversial interview with Piers Morgan was the last straw.
