Erik ten Hag reveals Lisandro Martinez called him before Manchester United transfer amidst Arsenal interest
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that Lisandro Martinez called him before his transfer amidst interest from Arsenal. The Dutch manager also revealed Antony was expected to leave Ajax.
The Red Devils ended up signing the two stars from De Godenzonen, who had thrived under the Dutch manager. The Argentine and Brazilian have had an immediate impact on the Old Trafford side.
Speaking to Voetbal International Editor-in-Chief Freek Jensen via transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Ten Hag disclosed Martinez called him before a move to Arsenal. On the other hand, the Dutch manager also admitted that Ajax knew about Antony’s intentions months back.
“Lisandro Martínez called me up and said: I will leave Ajax. I can sign for Arsenal but if you want me, I will go to Manchester United.
“Antony? In January Ajax already knew he would leave in the summer.”
The Argentine centre-back had the chance to move to North London. But in the end, thankfully, United got his signature. The 24-year-old has been solid at the Red Devils for the most part.
Martinez had a shaky start to life in Manchester. However, he has formed a formidable partnership in our backline alongside France international Raphael Varane.
The 24-year-old was also part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad. While he did not feature in the final against Les Bleus, the defender put in some brilliant displays throughout the prestigious competition.
Antony has also gotten off to a flying start at the Old Trafford side. The Brazilian scored in his first three Premier League games for the Red Devils. However, he has not played for the Manchester-based club since our 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League at home.
The 22-year-old was also part of the Tote’s contingent at the 2022 World Cup. However, Brazil crashed out of the quarter-finals after losing to Croatia on penalties.
