Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has been included in WhoScored’s World Cup U23 Best XI

Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot had an impressive start to the season under new manager Erik ten Hag and has solidified his position as the first-choice player for the club.

Dalot was selected in Fernando Santos’ Portugal squad for the FIFA World Cup and although he did not get his fair share of opportunities until the third group stage game, he performed admirably and thereby started the next two games for the national team as well

Such was his performance in the three fixtures at the tournament that Dalot has been selected in WhoScored’s World Cup U23 Best XI which is an impressive feat considering the number of minutes he played as compared to other players.

Dalot is joined by teammate Diogo Costa, who is one of United’s main targets to replace David de Gea but prising away the midfielder from FC Porto would be a big task in itself.

A look at the eleven players that have been selected signifies the impact that Dalot created with his performances, with most of the players in the list being well-established names.

It would be correct to argue that the Portuguese has found another level to his game under Ten Hag and has taken up the growth of the national team and eventually benched Manchester City’s talented right-back Joan Cancelo after his World Cup debut against Australia.

Signed by Jose Mourinho in 2018, the full-back came with a big reputation from LigaNos with Mourinho describing the player as ‘the best right-back in his age group’ at that time.

However, with a change of manager and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stepping in, the transfer of Aaron Wan Bissaka was done who continued to be the first choice under the Norwegian.

Dalot was shipped to AC Milan on a loan deal and many believed that we might have seen the last of the Portuguese who was given a big reception upon his arrival.

However, with Ten Hag stepping in and Dalot also silently working on bettering his game, it was an instant match and since then the Portuguese have not looked back.

With a new contract deal rumoured to be on the cards, it is delightful news for all the Reds to see the talented full-back staying at Old Trafford for the near future.
