Paul Parker urges Manchester United to sign Portugal and FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa
Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has urged the club to sign Portugal and FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The ex-Red Devil has been impressed by the 23-year-old’s displays this season.
The Old Trafford side’s current number one David de Gea is in the final year of his current contract. However, the club do have the option to extend the 32-year-old’s deal by a further season.
However, speaking to MyBettingSites (h/t Express), Parker, who spent five years at the Manchester-based club, feels United should pursue Costa if they are considering parting ways with the former Atletico Madrid star.
“If Manchester United really wants a new goalkeeper, then they should sign Diogo Costa from FC Porto.
“I have seen him a lot for Porto and now he also did a brilliant job during the World Cup. He would be the guy to sign if they don’t have faith in De Gea.”
The Porto shot-stopper broke into the Primeira Liga outfit’s starting lineup in the previous campaign. Since then, the Portuguese star has cemented his place in between the sticks for the Dragoes.
This season, the 23-year-old has turned many heads with his performances, especially in the Champions League. The goalkeeper saved multiple penalties in group stages of the UCL in the current campaign and even provided an assist against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena.
Costa was the first choice in goal for Fernando Santos at the 2022 World Cup. Portugal faltered in the quarter-finals against Morocco and the 23-year-old made some grave errors in the prestigious tournament.
For now, United have De Gea. He has been exceptional for the Red Devils since last season. The 32-year-old has continued to replicate his fine displays in the 2022/23 campaign as well.
However, the Spaniard has a shaky start under Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager seemingly wants to play out from the back. But in that regard, the former Atletico shot-stopper leaves a lot to be desired.
