SL Benfica deny Liverpool agreement for Manchester United-linked and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez
Primeira Liga outfit SL Benfica have denied reports of an agreement with Liverpool for Argentina star Enzo Fernandez amidst Manchester United links, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils have been linked with the 21-year-old’s signature. However, Jurgen Klopp’s outfit had reportedly hashed out a deal with the Eagles for the midfielder.
But sources close to Benfica have refuted any claims of a transfer for Fernandez. In fact, the Portuguese side are interested in keeping a hold of the Argentina international.
The 21-year-old signed for the Eagles in the summer of 2022 from a club in his home country, River Plate. Since then, the midfielder has been a pivotal member of Roger Schmidt’s team.
In the current campaign, the Primeira Liga outfit have gone unbeaten in all competitions. They also surprised many by pipping Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus to the top spot in their Champions League group.
Fernandez has also shone at the 2022 World Cup for Argentina. After coming off the bench in the first two games in Qatar, the 21-year-old has become a key player for Lionel Scaloni’s team. La Albiceleste will now face France in the Final in Qatar.
United signed Christian Eriksen at the start of the recent transfer window. Towards the end of the summer of 2022, we got Casemiro from Real Madrid.
The two 30-year-olds have become important players for the Red Devils under Erik ten hag. However, when either of the two have been unavailable, the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have not been able to replicate the Danish or Brazilian national’s influence in the starting lineup.
