Real Madrid are keen on PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo amidst Manchester United links
Former PSV Eindhoven star Rene van de Kerkhof has revealed that Real Madrid are keen on Cody Gakpo amidst links to Manchester United. The ex-forward claims that Los Blancos want to replace Karim Benzema with the Holland international.
The 23-year-old has been in fine form this season. For the Red and Whites, the forward has made 24 appearances in the current campaign, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists.
Speaking to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Manchester Evening News), Van de Kerkhof disclosed Madrid’s interest in Gakpo. However, he wants PSV to sell the forward for a premium price.
“I have reliable Spanish sources that report that Real wants to get Cody Gakpo as Benzema’s successor.
“What I heard is that they have a serious interest in Gakpo there, but PSV certainly should not sell it for less than 75 million euros this winter. Although that amount is not a problem for that club.”
Apart from shining for the Eredivisie outfit, the 23-year-old also shone at the 2022 World Cup. The forward scored in each of the Netherlands’ group-stage fixtures.
Louis van Gaal’s team then beat the United States in the round of 16. However, they were unable to overcome Argentina, who beat the Oranje on penalties in the quarter-finals.
Madrid currently have a host of young talent up front. Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo have shown great potential at the Santiago Bernabeu outfit. However, Benzema is 34 and in the final years of his career.
At United, Cristiano Ronaldo’s untimely exit from the club has dwindled Erik ten Hag’s options in the front line. Anthony Martial is the only natural striker left in the squad.
Unfortunately, the France international has been sidelined for most of the campaign due to injuries. As a result, the Dutch manager has had to rely on Marcus Rashford as the number nine.

Thus, the Red Devils evidently need to bolster their attack. Gakpo is a versatile forward with a keen eye for goal. Hopefully, the Old Trafford side are able to fend off interest from other clubs to land the 23-year-old’s signature.
