Real Madrid to compete with Manchester United for Argentina and SL Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez
Manchester United will have to compete with European champions Real Madrid in the race for Argentina and SL Benfica star Enzo Fernandez, according to Spanish outlet Marca (h/t The Sun).
The Red Devils are interested in the 21-year-old’s services. However, Los Blancos are also eyeing the midfielder’s signature. The 2021/22 Champions League winners see the youngster as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham.
The 19-year-old is the Santiago Bernabeu side’s top target. However, the competition for the former Birmingham City starlet has made the La Liga side turn to other options.
Fernandez is next on Madrid’s list. However, he only recently signed for the Primeira Liga outfit. The 21-year-old’s current contract contains a £103 million release clause.
Los Blancos recently sold Casemiro to United in the summer of 2022. But the Spanish giants still have a host of talented players in the middle of the park. The La Liga outfit can still call upon veterans such as Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
However, Madrid also have a host of young talent in the engine room. They signed Aurelien Tchouameni from AS Monaco in the recent transfer window. On top of that, Carlo Ancellotti already had Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga at his disposal.

As for the Red Devils, apart from the former Los Blancos midfielder, we signed Christian Eriksen in the summer of 2022 to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad. The Danish and Brazilian stars have made an immediate impact in the engine room.

Unfortunately, our other options leave a lot to be desired. Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have failed to convince fans of their quality over the years.
Thus, the Old Trafford side evidently need fresh blood in the midfield. Fernandez is still young and is showcasing his qualities at the World Cup. However, it remains to be seen whether the club will want to pay over the top for the Argentine.
