Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet being eyed by Manchester United
Manchester United have set their sights on Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, according to Het Laaste Nieuws via HITC (h/t Manchester Evening News). The Red Devils also had an eye on the Belgian in the recent transfer window.
In the summer of 2022, Martin Dubravka was signed by Man United from Newcastle United on a season-long loan. However, the Old Trafford side could revisit their interest in Mignolet in the coming future.
The 34-year-old spent six seasons in the Premier League with Liverpool. In his time in Merseyside, the shot-stopper had many ups and downs.
Initially, Mignolet was a mainstay in between the sticks for our North West derby rivals. However, the 34-year-old lost his prominence in the Liverpool squad over time. And eventually, the Belgian left for Brugge in the summer of 2019.
With the Blauw-Zwart, Mignolet has become a key member of the team once again. The 34-year-old also seems to have regained his form with the Belgian outfit. Mignolet has featured 17 times for Brugge in the 2022/23 campaign in all competitions. And the shot-stopper has kept 10 clean sheets.
The 34-year-old’s performances in the Champions League this season have caught a lot of people’s attention. The Blauw-Zwart have beaten the likes of Atletico Madrid to qualify for the round of 16.
Moignolet’s recent display against Los Rojiblancos at the Metropolitano Stadium was impressive. The 34-year-old made some brilliant saves to secure a point for the Belgian outfit in a 0-0 draw.
Erik ten Hag currently has David de Gea and Tom Heaton in the squad as goalkeeping options apart from Martin Dubravka. The Spaniard has been the preferred choice in the current campaign, having played in every fixture with the former Magpies’ shot-stopper not being afforded minutes.
