Manchester United confirm Cristiano Ronaldo will not accept the charge by FA
Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo was involved in an incident after he knocked out a phone out of a fan’s hand after a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park last season. He received a police caution for the same.
Now the governing body of the Premier League Football Association (FA) decided to probe the incident and charged Cristiano Ronaldo with “improper and/or violent conduct” in a breach of FA Rule E3 and has been given till Monday to submit his reply to the charges.
According to BBC Sport, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag confirmed that the Portuguese forward will not be accepting the charges levied on him and has the full backing of the club.
“We spoke about that (FA charge) and he will not accept it”
Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United was met with a lot of excitement with the Portuguese coming off a successful spell at his former side Juventus. He was seen as someone who would take Manchester United, who finished second in the Premier League the year before, closer to the title challenge and rival noisy neighbours Manchester City.
However, things did not turn out as expected and the team plummeted. Manchester United eventually settled for the Europa League, falling well short of expectations. Three different managers, a toxic dressing room and a sense of gloominess laid large in Old Trafford last season and a mutual feeling of wanting the season to be over as fast as possible.
Frustration amongst players was blatantly evident during games and Ronaldo’s incident in question is during one such evening when the team performed horrible and succumbed to a 1-0 loss to Everton which majorly hampered their UEFA Champions League qualifications chances.
Despite the season being in the category of one of the worst seasons for the club, Ronaldo managed to score 24 goals in all contributions having played 39 games clearly proving every doubter wrong about him being able to perform in the Premier League at the age of 37.
The Portuguese international made his message very clear to leave the club in the summer transfer window and his agent, Jorge Mendes, tried everything in his power to engineer a move for the player to one of the Champions League playing teams.
However, no move materialised and he ended up staying at United for the foreseeable future but has majorly been seen coming on as a substitute. Unlike the usual nature of superstars, Ronaldo is believed to have been totally professional once it was confirmed that he could not leave.
