Sacked Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel rejected an approach from Manchester United earlier this year
Manchester United were looking to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the manager earlier this year. However, the former Chelsea boss turned down a chance to manage the Red Devils, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required) [h/t Metro].
With the turmoil at the Stamford Bridge side after Roman Abramovich was sanctioned, United tried to capitalise on the situation. However, the Red Devils were unable to entice Tuchel, who opted to stay with the Blues.
United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season and appointed Ralf Rangnick. And earlier this year, the Chelsea head coach was an option to take the reins at the Old Trafford club permanently.
The Manchester-based club ended up appointing Erik ten Hag as the manager at the end of the 2021/22 campaign. The Dutch manager had built up a vast pedigree in the Eredivisie before moving to England.
During pre-season, fans witnessed encouraging signs from the side that finished sixth in the Premier League last season. Our players looked sharp and on their toes.
However, the new campaign did not get off to the start most were hoping for. The new gaffer lost his first game in charge of United against Brighton & Hove Albion. We then proceeded to concede four goals against Brentford in our second fixture.
It’s anyone’s guess if he now regrets it but in all fairness, Chelsea fans wouldn’t have expected the German boss to get the sack so suddenly.
Subsequently, Ten Hag made a number of big changes against Liverpool. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw. And we ended up beating Jurgen Klopp’s side 2-1.
The Red Devils have since continued their fine run of form. We have gotten the three points against Southampton and Leicester City. United then proceeded to hand Arsenal their first defeat of the season.

We sit three points off the top of the table at the moment. The Manchester-based club’s fortunes have changed quickly. However, one does evidently wonder what it would have been like had Tuchel taken charge of United.
