Alex Telles joined Sevilla on loan from Manchester United to solidify his World Cup chances

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles, who is currently on loan at Sevilla, has revealed the Qatar World Cup was a consideration in him leaving the Old Trafford side this summer.

The Brazil international has made his way into national team head coach Tite’s plans. However, the 29-year-old is not the first choice. Competition for places at United is high and game time is not guaranteed.

Speaking to TNT Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Telles wanted to be ready for the World Cup. And the 29-year-old’s move away from United would be a boost for his hopes to be on a plane with Tite’s squad. The left-back was candid about his hopes to be with A Selecao.

“Obviously. If I say no, I’ll be lying. I really believe in preparation. I know I’m on the radar, I know I was called for the last call-ups. So obviously having more and more minutes, playing as much as possible.

“So I’m exclusively focused on that preparation. I know it depends a lot on what I do at my club for me to be willing and always at a high level, so if I get called up for the national team, to be prepared.”

Telles made his way to Old Trafford in the summer of 2020 from FC Porto. In his two seasons at United, the Brazilian served as a backup for Luke Shaw.

With the England international’s injury in the previous campaign, Telles played a much more prominent role for the Red Devils in the 2021/22 season.

The 29-year-old has decent qualities going forward. Telles’ quality on the ball is evident in his play in the final third of the pitch. However, his defensive contribution leaves a lot to be desired.

Alex Telles would have had to contend for his place at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag was afforded the addition of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord. The 23-year-old Holland international has immediately made an impact in the side with his aggressiveness and tenacity.

Malacia has displaced Shaw for the number one spot in the last few games. The gaffer has opted to play the 23-year-old in his XI. And with him in the starting lineup, United have won four games on the trot.

Considering the quality and strength in depth in the left-back position at the Manchester-based club, it was wise of Telles to move to Sevilla.
