Former Manchester United star Juan Mata verbally agrees to move to Galatasaray
Juan Mata is close to moving to Galatasaray as a free agent after leaving Manchester United earlier this summer, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. The Spaniard’s contract with the Red Devils expired at the end of the previous campaign.
The former United midfielder has verbally agreed to a one-year deal with the Turkish outfit. Rumours of him joining Leeds United during the transfer window were off the mark.
Mata joined the Red Devils in the winter window of the 2013/14 season from Chelsea. The Spaniard became a key member for United in his initial years at Old Trafford. However, over the last few years, the 34-year-old played a bit-part role for the club.
United fans appreciate Mata for his contributions to the club. In eight-and-a-half-seasons in Manchester, The 34-year-old made 285 appearances for the club, scoring 51 goals and providing 47 assists.
In his time at United, Mata played mostly in the right-wing and the number 10 position. The Spaniard won the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League with the team.
Mata was one of the several players who left the club this summer. In the midfield area, United lost Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira as well.
The Red Devils added six new faces during the transfer window to replenish Erik ten Hag’s squad. The club made two signings to bolster the middle of the park. Christian Eriksen joined as a free agent while Casemiro arrived from Real Madrid.
In the previous campaign, the whole team lacked creativity in the midfield and failed to make an impact in the final third.
