Sergino Dest and Thomas Meunier are both available on loan for Manchester United with late deal on the cards
According to Jason Burt of the Telegraph on Twitter, Manchester United could sign a right-back late in the window with both Sergino Dest and Thomas Meunier available on loan deals.
It was felt that the Red Devils’ business would be over after the imminent arrivals of Antony from Ajax and Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United. But now, they could make a late move for a right-back.
The Barcelona right-back has been consistently dropped by manager Xavi Hernandez this season. Instead, the Spaniard has favoured playing centre-backs in that position – most recently, Jules Kounde, in their win against Real Valladolid.
As such, the USMNT star would know that he isn’t a part of Xavi’s plans, at least for the near future. He could get some playing time at United, with manager Erik ten Hag seemingly unconvinced by the options that he has right now.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense to sign another right-back despite already having Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot in the squad.
While Dest represents youth, Meunier, at 30, is among the more experienced players. He has experience playing for elite teams such as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Borussia Dortmund.
Both these players could prove to be smart acquisitions in their own right. Dalot hasn’t been too shabby when selected but if Ten Hag has envisioned a different type of right-back for his team, the board would be wise to back him.
