Transfer News: Christian Eriksen agrees to join Manchester United this summer

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Christian Eriksen has agreed to join Manchester United in principle for moving to Old Trafford in this summer transfer window. He has given his verbal approval, which would undoubtedly be a massive boost for them and their attempt to improve their squad under Erik ten Hag.

Man United have already proposed a three-year contract offer to Eriksen, which has now been accepted by the midfielder. He has communicated his decision to the club with a desire to ply his trade at Old Trafford from the next season onwards.

The Red Devils are currently preparing official paperwork to be signed, and the Dane will also be subjected to medical to finalise a move. While that is normal procedure, his cardiac arrest last summer and the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator he was fitted with following that incident makes this something to keep an eye on.

Great piece of news!

The 30-year-old’s addition to our team comes as a sigh of relief, looking at the departures we had in midfield. The exits of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard would still have dampened our quality regardless of their performances in recent years.

Furthermore, the lack of depth is also something that must be solved, especially to deal with the congested fixture list in the next season. Eriksen’s signing would greatly help in that regard, as the creative influx of quality he would bring would offer our attackers more clear-cut opportunities.

Furthermore, ten Hag can utilise his squad to the full extent with the introduction of the five substitution rule from the next campaign onwards. That means it is quite important to have a good blend of options available to choose from to deal with different situations.

Eriksen has certainly proven his worth in the past six months, looking at his impressive displays for Brentford and the Denmark national team. A three-year deal would also ensure that we would not be stuck with the attacking midfielder, especially when he nears the latter stages of his playing career.

Now, the fans would hope that there would not be any hiccups during medical tests even if the former Tottenham Hotspur man has played well at the top level in recent times. That is quite normal after the complications associated with heart issues but let’s wait and see how that turns out in the coming days.
