Erik ten Hag urges Dean Henderson to fight for a place at Manchester United.

Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United will offer Nottingham Forest the chance to sign Dean Henderson permanently

According to the Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United will consider including a buy option in their deal with Nottingham Forest to facilitate a move for Dean Henderson. He has struggled to get regular minutes at Old Trafford following David de Gea’s rise in form last season.

Forest want to sign Henderson on an initial loan deal with an optional clause to make his move permanent for £20million. Man United are ready to accept that proposal, with sources being increasingly confident about reaching an agreement in the coming days.

Talks over a possible move are currently progressing with “very good chances” of a deal getting struck in the future. It has already been confirmed that the England international is assessing the possibility of joining the Reds in the summer transfer window.

Is this the right choice?

There is no doubt that de Gea is one of the best in the business when it comes to shot-stopping in between the posts. However, apart from that, he falls short in other areas like dominating aerial duels, coming off the lines, on-the-ball technical skills, and so on.

In fact, Spain national team boss Luis Enrique had previously highlighted that as a reason for snubbing de Gea from his squad for the Nations League games. Those who have watched Erik ten Hag’s Ajax would know that Andre Onana was much more involved in the team’s build-up phase, which raises questions about this decision.

After all, de Gea cannot be depended upon to replicate what Onana had done, while Henderson, on the other

hand, is much more well-rounded than our number one goalkeeper. In such a case, perhaps we may be taking a huge risk by including a buy option in the deal with Steve Cooper’s side.

Furthermore, de Gea is also in the twilight of his playing career, which means that losing someone like Henderson adds to the risks involved. Then again, the fact of the matter is that the board would probably have discussed this subject with ten Hag and have taken this route after receiving his approval.

If that is the case, then it will be interesting to see what ten Hag plans to do with de Gea in the upcoming season. But that is not the only concerning factor, as there have been suggestions within the fanbase that the current price tag is relatively small for a man of Henderson’s qualities.

It remains to be seen how this situation surrounding Henderson will turn out to be in the next few days. Let’s hope that the 25-year-old’s potential sale will not be something that we may regret in the future.
