Real Madrid star Marco Asensio breaks silence on his future amidst Manchester United transfer links

Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has weighed in on his future prospects amidst links to Manchester United for a potential transfer. His prominence at Santiago Bernabeu has waned over the years, which has seemingly put him at a crossroads where he would have to make a crucial decision for his playing career.

Asensio will see his current contract with Real expire at the end of the next season. His future is up in the air right now despite him being happy in the Spanish capital. That is the case even with Carlo Ancelotti’s continued trust, but the winger himself has paved the way for a potential exit this summer.

Speaking in an interview with AS (h/t Metro), the Spaniard has revealed that he will assess his future after two weeks following his international duty with the national team. He added that his agent Jorge Mendes is currently looking at the options and will help him in making a decision.

“I have one more year in my contract yet here we are talking about me leaving Real Madrid. It’s true that I didn’t have the time to think and consider many things because of the Champions League final and the celebrations, but when these next two weeks with the national team end, we will talk about it all. This is something that my agent is taking care of.”

Could Asensio revive his career at Man Utd?

Earlier, El Chiringuito (h/t Metro) stated that Mendes offered Asensio’s services to Erik ten Hag during his search for prospective clubs. That led to talks over a potential move from Man United for the attacker ahead of the next campaign.

Asensio, who primarily plays on the right-wing, would suit our needs at this moment as we lack someone natural in that position. After Jadon Sancho was shifted to the left-hand side of the attack, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga were forced to deputise in that role.

That calls for the need to reinforce that area as ten Hag looks like to be on a similar page. He wants the Red Devils to bolster that position to help with their rebuild moving forward. Asensio is not the only option right now, as Hakim Ziyech of Chelsea and Antony from Ajax have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Asensio being 26 makes him a more valuable option compared to Ziyech, who is 29 years of age. The latter has prior experience working with ten Hag, although prising him away from a direct rival may just be difficult indeed.

Antony, meanwhile, could potentially be very expensive as he is one of the highly-rated upcoming superstars in his position as of now. Right-wing is not the only area that must be strengthened this summer which means that we cannot sign world-class players in every role.

Managing the funds is an important task, so perhaps Asensio could be the route we go down into, as he is still a dependable option looking at his performances after returning from injury. Furthermore, if ten Hag can help him get back to his best self, we would have a steal on our hands if he does leave this summer which is a possibility since a contract extension is unlikely at this moment.
