Asensio wants to stay at Madrid and is willing to accept the same wages he is currently on. However, Los Blancos president Florentino Perez wants Asesnio to take a pay cut, which the Spain international doe not intend to do.

The Red Devils are one of the teams who have the 27-year-old on their radar. However, Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, are being linked with the forward.

Asensio has failed to live up to the early expectations in Madrid. Initially, the Spaniard shone at the Santiago Bernabeu outfit and looked set to become a world-class superstar.

However, injuries have hampered the winger’s development over the years. Now, the 26-year-old is mostly a backup player for Los Blancos. Carlo Ancelotti has preferred other options in the starting lineup ahead of the former Mallorca star.

United signed Antony in the summer of 2022 from Ajax. The youngster has been Erik ten Hag’s first choice on the right wing. However, the 23-year-old has been inconsistent in his first few months in Manchester.

The gaffer has also been unable to rely on Jadon Sancho to play on the right-hand side of the attack. As a result, there does not seem to be adequate competition for the Brazil international in the team.

Carlo Ancelotti has preferred other options like Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo ahead of Asensio. The 27-year-old has made 31 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring six goals and providing five assists.

As a result, the 27-year-old could be on the move in the upcoming transfer window. In the Premier League, Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in him, while the Red Devils were looking to acquire the forward’s services in the summer of 2022.

Asensio signed for Los Blancos in 2014 and subsequently spent a season on loan at Espanyol. However, the 27-year-old soon made waves with the La Liga giants and was challenging the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale for a place in the starting lineup.

“There is talk that I am changing Real Madrid’s mind. But I have always tried to give the best that I have inside and then it will be known. The one who decides, too, is the club, it does not only depend on me. After the World Cup, we’ll both make a decision.

“What if I want to renew? Hopefully it can happen and I’ll be very happy at Real Madrid for many years, hopefully everything will be given to stay for 10 more years.”

The Spaniard signed for the European champions from Mallorca in the summer of 2015. And the winger spent a fruitful season on loan at Espanyol before naming his mark at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Erik ten Hag evidently wanted to bolster his attacking options. All summer, it seemed Cristiano Ronaldo would move away from the club. And in order to plan for that, the Red Devils needed to add more bodies up front.

However, the Portugal international has ended up staying for the time being. The 37-year-old ended the previous campaign as United’s top goalscorer in all competitions.

Last season, apart from Ronaldo, the rest of our attackers failed to make an impact. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial had a poor 2021/22 campaign.

Thus, fans felt the side needed to strengthen the forward line. However, we did not buy an attacker until the very end of the transfer window. The first two games of the season reflected the need for additional reinforcements up front.

United players failed to get on the scoresheet against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. However, since then, Rashford and Sancho have been excellent. Anthony Elnaga has also been a regular starter.

United then came up against Brentford and lost 4-0. Once again, the forward line had a hard time creating chances. The few opportunities we had were wasted.

The Manchester-based club had similar issues in the attack last season. Only Cristiano Ronaldo was able to contribute enough goals and the Portugal international’s future is uncertain at the club.

He looks to be nearing the exit doors at Santiago Bernabeu, with his future hanging in the balance right now.

Asensio is in line to become a free agent next summer, and there have been no signs that an extension is on the cards. Moreover, Real have also slapped a feasible price tag worth £25million, which has put clubs like Man United and the Toons on red alert.

They are not alone, though, as Arsenal and AC Milan are also in the running for the Spanish international as of now. Liverpool have been touted as a potential destination, but it has since then been claimed that they are not chasing after Asensio ahead of the next season.

Asensio, a good option for Man Utd?

That being said, it is quite surprising to see that our interest in the 26-year-old is not as active as the other suitors right now. After all, we could use a right-wing addition to our squad, considering how there is a lack of natural options on that front for Erik ten Hag to choose from.

We are currently pursuing Ajax’s Antony, but his valuation of £70million is too far-fetched, which does force us to look elsewhere. Hence, it is puzzling to see how we are not targeting Asensio to a great extent, as he could be a suitable alternative if given regular opportunities.

In fact, Asensio’s valuation makes him an even more attractive prospect under our current circumstances. That is especially the case now that we have declared an attacking signing as our next priority due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to leave in this summer transfer window.

Signing Asensio would mean that ten Hag can play Marcus Rashford in a position that is more suited to him than the right-hand side of the frontline. Rashford played as a striker in the past, and he had done well when he was at his best form, especially in the 2020-21 campaign.

That could help us deal with a situation where Ronaldo would leave Old Trafford ahead of the upcoming season. However, Newcastle United’s introduction in this pursuit would certainly trouble us if we change our stance on Los Blancos’ ace.

After all, the Magpies are a financial powerhouse indeed, although our presence in the Europa League would probably give us an edge over them on sporting terms. In any case, let’s wait and see how this situation develops in the coming days or weeks ahead.
