Manchester United contemplate a transfer for Chelsea star N’Golo Kante
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United are currently assessing the prospect of signing Chelsea star N’Golo Kante on a potential transfer this summer. They are searching the market for midfield additions to solve their issues that have been visible for quite some time.
Kante is in line to enter the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window. He is expected to be made available on a cut-price deal for that reason, which has forced his future into uncertain waters. Thomas Tuchel’s desire to add fresh blood into the midfield does not help his case either.
The Red Devils’ decision to consider a move for Kante is down to the setbacks they have suffered in their pursuit of the other targets. Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United and Declan Rice from West Ham United are the other options on the shortlist as of now.
Not the road Man Utd go down to
Targeting Kante would have made sense if he was at the peak of his powers which has been far from the case for quite some time. His displays this year have been particularly disappointing, which could arguably have played a part in his uncertain future.
Furthermore, the French international has also been suffering from regular injury issues, which have risen quite a lot in recent campaigns. Even Tuchel himself expressed his concerns a while ago regarding the midfielder’s increasing absence from the squad.
What’s interesting is that we were offered an opportunity to sign Kante in 2020, but those at Old Trafford passed on that proposal. If that is the case, then it is quite reasonable to think that the club would be wise to pass up the chance to sign him now, given how he has arguably only declined as a player since then.
The Blues superstar did enjoy a successful season for club and country in the previous term. However, it appears that his playstyle has finally taken a toll on his body, so it would not be wise to take a risk with him, especially when we cannot afford to have uncertainties at such a crucial stage.
The Manchester side’s future would depend on our plans for this summer so we must find a suitable option who could lead us to a better future. Hence, it would be best if we look elsewhere rather than pursuing Kante for now.

Kante can, of course, play a big role in the short term if signed, but he must fit the playing style of Erik ten Hag if the club actually thinks about signing him. The Dutch manager must be given the final say on such a decision given he is the man tasked with taking this club back to the glory days.
Erik ten Hag is a keen admirer of Ajax ace Edson Alvarez, so perhaps we should decide to have a look at him if there are problems when it comes to chasing the other targets. The fans would hope that the club can address the issues to an extent so that we can facilitate a smooth transition this summer.
