“Not rocket science”- Rangnick gives the time frame it can take to fully fix Man United’s issues

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick decides on time frame to ‘fully sort out’ Manchester United’s on-field issues

Speaking after his side’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Saturday, as quoted by the BBC (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick said that it would take two or three transfer windows to get the club back to winning ways.

The German saw his team having to come back from a goal down to secure a draw at Old Trafford, dropping two precious points at home in the race to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League table by the end of the season.

Rangnick said that there was no quick fix to improve the situation at the club, but it is not rocket science to take the right kind of decisions in picking players and managers to get the best possible solutions in every transfer window.

“It takes right decisions and where you want to go to, what kind of players, what kind of manager, and then in every transfer window try to get the best possible solutions. This is possible. This is not rocket science.”

The Red Devils currently sit in seventh place in the league table, three points away from fourth place that would guarantee them a Champions League qualification spot. However, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and West Ham United all stand in their way.

“It has to be done”

The former RB Leipzig manager has been at the club since late last year, overseeing the January transfer window, but did not bring any new players into the club to improve their league position or strengthen the team in the second half of the season. However, he did sanction the temporary exits of first-team stars Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek who were starved for game time.

Rangnick said that an improvement at the club to fix their issues may not take three or four years, but perhaps two or three transfer windows, and it needed to be done to get the club back to where it belongs.

“It has to be done – and if that happens it does not necessarily need three or four years, maybe two or three transfer windows – then the situation could be different.”

The 63-year-old is expected to make way for a new manager ahead of the new campaign, with his tenure as interim boss expiring in the summer. Although in charge of the team for a short while, Rangnick seems to have understood the reason behind the club’s underwhelming finishes over the past few years.

His predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to secure top-four finishes during his reign at the Theatre of Dreams, including a runner-up spot in the PL last year, but could not contribute to any silverware being won.

Rangnick has failed in that aspect too, with exits from the FA Cup and Champions League during his time at the club seeing the Manchester side now go five years without winning a trophy. The UEFA Europa League was the last competition we won, back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

Despite the German’s imminent exit from the manager’s dugout in the summer, he seems to have sent a message to the new boss as well as the club about what they are expected to do in order to see the club fix its issues and compete for trophies once again.
