Manchester United enquire about Lyon ace Moussa Dembele after scouts watched his recent victory against Porto

According to football journalist and Manchester United insider Jonathan Shrager on Twitter (h/t Express), the Red Devils have enquired about Olympique Lyon ace Moussa Dembele and his contract situation with the club ahead of a potential summer move.

Dembele recently turned out for Lyon in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie in the UEFA Europa League against Porto, helping them to a 1-0 lead to take back to France. Despite not finding the back of the net, he played the full ninety minutes of the match.

Shrager said that United had sent scouts to watch the player in action against the Portuguese giants, and he definitely gave them much to talk about after a fine display in which he picked up the only assist of the game.

Dembele has been plying his trade in Ligue 1 since 2018 when he earned a move to France after impressing in Scotland with Premiership giants Celtic, where he led the line for two years and was a regular goalscoring outlet for the side.

Previously monitored by United

The Red Devils meanwhile, are in search of an attacker who can supply them with the goals next season as their current crop of forwards has had a terrible time in front of goals. Despite boasting names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Marcus Rashford, the trio have been out of form.

Dembele could provide them with the required goals next term, given his impressive showings for Lyon in the past couple of years. It is not the first time his name has come up when discussing all things United, as the English club are said to have monitored him previously as well.

Not the first time he’s been linked with a move to Old Trafford, perhaps this summer is when the player actually earns a move to Manchester and takes his game to the next level. The Red Devils are said to have enquired about his contract situation at Lyon, where his current deal with them expires in the summer of 2023.

Doubts about the attacker settling into life in the Premier League can also be quashed, given that the player was previously a youth product at Fulham and has made a few appearances in the English top-flight already.

With United looking for fresh ideas in attack and someone capable of leading the attack for years to come, the 25-year-old could solve their problems if the club manages to convince him to swap his native France for a return to England.

Having already impressed his suitor’s scouts, Dembele will hope to keep up his current form and continue performing at the level he is at in order to earn a move back to the Premier League and turn out for arguably the biggest club in the world. That is, if he desires such a move and Richard Arnold and Co. actually formalize our apparent interest in the ex-Fulham man.
