Jamie Carragher urges Manchester United to poach Thomas Tuchel amid Chelsea crisis

Writing in his column for The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Manchester United to take advantage of Chelsea’s recent crisis and poach Thomas Tuchel as their new permanent manager in the summer.

Chelsea were plunged into turmoil earlier today after the UK government decided to add club owner Roman Abramovich to their sanctions list following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich is said to have close ties with Vladimir Putin, and the government has taken action against the Russian.

Carragher, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, said that Tuchel’s uncertainty at Chelsea will force him to seek employment elsewhere, and if a club like United come calling, he needs to accept the offer.

“Tuchel, like everyone else at Stamford Bridge, will have no idea what the future holds at his current club. No-one can offer him any assurances about how the squad will look at the start of next season given the club’s sale is on hold. No manager wants to be working amid such a background of uncertainty. If he gets the chance to leave for a club of United’s stature, he must take it.”

Tuchel only moved to west London last year, replacing Frank Lampard as the Blues sacked the club legend after failing to get the results and slipping down the Premier League table. The German has enjoyed a successful spell so far, winning the Champions League, Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.

“No-brainer”

Man United are expected to appoint a new permanent manager in the summer when interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s time in the dugout expires. The club are looking to usher in a new era under new management, and they are sure to look to elite coaches for the job.

Carragher believes that United need look no further than Tuchel, saying that the move would be a no-brainer as they would be able to provide the German with the security and backing that a top coach craves.

“United can offer him the security and backing every top coach craves. Yes, it will seem a predatory move – taking advantage of Chelsea’s crisis – but from United and Tuchel’s perspective the more you consider it, the more of a no-brainer it is.”

Chelsea are in deep crisis at the moment and the club won’t be able to hand out new contracts to either players or staff members. With a number of players into the last few months of their current deals with the Blues, the London outfit may just see an exodus at the end of the season.

With the side unable to sign new players, the future of the club is in doubt until further notice. At a time like this, Tuchel will probably feel safer at a club where his future is certain and he does not have to face the repercussions of his owners’ actions.

Man United have the deep pockets to give him the freedom to sign new players as well as perhaps start his own project at the club. Tuchel took over at Chelsea and inherited Frank Lampard’s players, but with a potential clean slate planned at Old Trafford ahead of the new season, the German could start from scratch and shape his team the way he wants.

Nothing has been said of Tuchel’s situation at Chelsea despite the turmoil they find themselves in. It may not be the most moral thing to poach a manager from a club in crisis, but there can be no doubt that both manager and the new club will be better off from the decision.
