Transfer News: Manchester United targetting summer move for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are looking to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele at the end of the season in an attempt to add on to their attacking ranks.
Despite starting his senior career in England, Dembele made a name for himself at Celtic before he eventually moved to Lyon, where the striker currently plies his trade. The player also had a brief loan spell at Atletico Madrid.
The attacker clearly has experience playing in multiple leagues, with a penchant for scoring goals everywhere. This makes him a very attractive option for United, who have struggled to find the back of the net this term.
Boasting names like Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani to lead the line for us, the pair have fallen flat in their performances this season. While the former has been out of form in 2022, the latter has barely put together a few appearances for us due to a recurring injury problem.
Attacking replacement needed
Apart from the attacking duo who have a combined average age of 36, our other attackers in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have also had their struggles in front of the net. Rashford has looked like a shadow of himself in recent times, while Martial is out on loan in an attempt to rediscover his scoring touch.
Clearly, none of our strikers has been able to effectively lead the line for us this campaign. In order to fix this issue next season, United have targeted Dembele, who may be available for £25m in the summer if Lyon decide to part with their frontman.
His current contract with the Ligue 1 side runs out in 2023. It remains to be seen if that forces Lyon to sell him at the end of the season in order to avoid losing him for free next year- which is always a situation a club would rather want to avoid.
Given how poor the Red Devils’ goalscoring record has been, there is little doubt to see them linked to a player who has scored five in his last seven games for Lyon, proving his mettle as a regular outlet for goals.

Mason Greenwood’s suspension this season has also seen the Theatre of Dreams short of quality attacking options. With Cavani, Ronaldo, Rashford, and Martial all doubtful about their futures in Manchester, it becomes a necessity more than a priority for the club to sign a striker to lead the line next season.
Dembele’s cheap price tag combined with his experience playing in England and the Champions League makes him a shrewd option to sign in the summer. He might not be a household name at the moment, but that could change if he flourishes in the Premier League with United next term.
