According to ESPN, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has emerged as a possible short-term candidate for the managerial role at Manchester United.

The Italian manager has a lucrative history at the elite level. Very few managers can boast of such an impressive resume. The 62-year-old manager has won a plethora of titles which included getting his hands on the UEFA Champions League trophy three times and winning the FIFA Club World Cup on two occasions till now.

Ancelotti also possesses extensive experience in the Premier League helping his former club Chelsea lift the illustrious PL trophy in the 2009-10 season. His ability to manage high-profile players and get the best out of his squad with the available resources could make him a desired prospect.

The former Bayern Munich manager is also leading the La Liga race with the Los Blancos this season. It is believed that the Italian professional manager has a close relationship with Sir Alex Fergusson and the Red Devils would be hoping that this dynamic would be enough to lure the 62-year-old to Old Trafford.

Mauricio Pochettino is another prime managerial candidate for the job at the Theatre of Dreams. Fergusson is also said to be an admirer of the fellow Argentine manager but it is believed that the Mancunian club could go after Ancelotti should they fail to land any of their top targets.

Can a new manager make us dream again?

The Manchester-based club have been struggling to recreate their magic of past times in the last few seasons. We have seen arch-rivals Manchester City overtake us in terms of their consistency and performances over the last few campaigns which is not a happy sight for the Man United faithful.

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to stabilise the ship to some extent but the lack of silverware along with their inability to deliver favourable performances every week played a major role in the sacking of the Norwegian.

The club hasn’t won a single major trophy ever since Jose Mourinho departed the club and that is a worrying sign for us. Solskjaer came close on occasions but was never fully able to get us across the line.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick took over the reins from the former FK Molde man this season. Whilst the German has succeeded in organising a better defensive structure and adopting a more intense style of play, the lack of finishing from the Red Devils is a recurring theme that continues to haunt them.

The former Everton boss has shown his prowess on several occasions and the Red Devils could really profit from someone who brings that kind of mentality to the table. A world-class tactician such as Carlo Ancelotti may just be what Man Utd needs to get the ball rolling in their favour. That being said, luring the former AC Milan manager to Old Trafford may not be such as easy task given his reputation and that he is currently under contract at the Santiago Bernabeu
