Transfer News: Manchester United send scouts to watch Benfica forward Darwin Nunez

According to Portuguese news outlet A Bola (h/t The Irish Sun), Manchester United sent scouts to watch Benfica forward Darwin Nunez alongside several other major European clubs. He has attracted a lot of attention following his excellent performances for the Portuguese giants this season.

Man United were present to witness Nunez score a goal against Tondela as his side beat them 3-1 at the weekend. The strike took him to the top the goal scoring chart for the 2021-22 Portugal Primeira Liga campaign. He has so far scored 16 goals in the division so far from just 17 appearances.

The Red Devils join the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan who are all keeping tabs on the Uruguayan. It is stated that their presence was “certainly directed” towards him and his display was “certainly worth a lot of notes”. He could be in line to be sold in the future as Benfica Lisbon are counting on making some money from his departure.

Cavani replacement?

The 22-year-old has certainly been on a hot streak throughout this season, having scored 21 goals alongside two assists from 26 matches across all competitions. The striker also played a major role in knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League in the group stages.

The centre-forward is unlikely to come cheap but if the performances so far is any indication of his potential, Man United could land themselves a special talent. Nunez’s dribbling ability combined with his knack to score goals from any position makes him a dangerous foe for any defender to deal with.

As such, the Uruguay international could be useful for us in the future to meet our needs in the forward department. Securing his signature would not be easy as West Ham United and Newcastle United are also interested in securing his services. With Bayern, Dortmund and Milan also in the fray, we could possibly see a race for his signature in the coming transfer windows.

More Manchester United News

With Edinson Cavani’s contract running out at the end of this season, we must look at life past him. He has had a drop off in quality from last season while also struggling with injuries. Such issues are normal for a player in the twilight of his playing career, but we should look towards protecting our interests.

Jesse Lingard is also in line to become a free agent, while Anthony Martial may not have a future with us after his loan spell with Sevilla. Marcus Rashford has also struggled to get going this campaign, indicating the need for another attacker on the roster. Nunez could be just the man we need, but only time will tell whether that is the case or not.
