Ralf Rangnick reveals two problems that Manchester United need to improve upon
Ralf Rangnick has expressed the two problems that Manchester United need to improve upon to ensure success in the future. His side is gearing up to face off against Burnley in the Premier League later today as they attempt to push for a top-four finish. The Red Devils would be looking to put behind the loss to Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
After an excellent showing against Boro in the first half, we could not take advantage of it later in the game and went on to lose on penalties. Despite the improvements in the last few games, the team needs to bring in the results if they hope to have a successful season. The away game against the Clarets would be a perfect opportunity for us to put in a solid performance that actually results in a win.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester United official website), Rangnick has mentioned that Man United needed to put away the chances that come their way more clinically. He added that they need to be quick with their pressing as it could have prevented the opportunities that they conceded to the opponents.
“Number one, we just wasted too many clear-cut chances. The other one was the 10 seconds before we conceded that handball goal, as I may call it, it was a perfect counter-pressing situation on the sideline in the middle of their half.”
“We took away time, the only thing we forgot is taking away the ball from them. This led to a situation where, eight seconds later, we were outnumbered in our box and allowed them to score that handball goal.”
Be proactive!
The German boss cannot be blamed for this situation as it was evident that the players wasted many chances that should easily have been put in the net. The horrendous blunder from Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo’s missed penalty are just some of the opportunities that we should have taken on the night.
Pressing is another aspect of the game that we cannot take lightly. After all, if the team as a whole does not initiate the move in unison, it opens up possibilities for opponents to cut through us with ease. When done right, such tactics can hand us a major advantage, but they can also lead to bigger issues if the structure is not solid enough.
One could say that the goal was a handball and it should not have stood in the first place for Boro. But that is a thing of the past. We can learn from our mistakes but there is no point crying over spilt milk for too long.
Instead, the focus should now be to finish in the top four places and have a solid run in the Champions League. Burnley currently sit 20th in the league with just 1 win throughout this league season.
