Jadon Sancho advised to follow Cristiano Ronaldo to succeed at Manchester United
Jadon Sancho has been asked to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo to become successful at Manchester United. Both of them joined the club the previous summer, but the latter has enjoyed a much better time compared to the youngster.
Man United paid €85million in transfer fees to Borussia Dortmund for Sancho’s services, but the amount has not been justified so far. He has featured 23 times this season and only has two goals to his name, which is a sharp contrast to his time in Germany. Ronaldo, however, has netted 14 times alongside providing three assists in the same number of appearances.
Speaking in an interview with Offer Bets (h/t Manchester Evening News), former Red Devils midfielder Alan Smith told the Englishman to look at how Cristiano adapted to the Premier League since rejoining in the summer. He has backed the young winger to showcase his abilities once he gets settled into the new surroundings.
“With young players, you get inconsistency – that’s only natural. He [Sancho] will also need the support of experienced players to help him along, and he’s got certain players around him at the club that he needs to look to in order to keep improving, and I’m sure that is what he’s trying to do. When Cristiano first came, it took him time to get used to the league – the pace of it, the physicality, getting kicked all the time, that kind of learning curve. He’s been given a run of games now, and I think that consistency will come now he’s feeling a bit more settled.”
Good advice?
The 21-year-old’s struggles are not entirely down to him when one looks at the appropriate context. The entire team was going through a tough phase under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and while Sancho was himself not impressive, his teammates did not make things easy for him.
Even under Ralf Rangnick, the England international did not enjoy stability, having been used as a number ten alongside Bruno Fernandes. Things have changed in recent times and the German international has seemingly settled on a 4-2-3-1 system for now.
As such, the Red Devils wide-man still has time to hit the ground running, given this is his first season at the club. As time passes, he is bound to get acclimated to the league while playing in a formation where he is best utilised. At the same time, as Smith mentioned above, it would be best for him to look at experienced players to get accustomed to the surroundings.
Learning from experienced players is a piece of sound advice since they have gone through adversity throughout their careers. And Ronaldo is one to look up to since he has been consistent over the years despite age catching up to him as well.
