Manchester United could target Kalvin Phillips as West Ham United make massive transfer bid

According to Evening Standard, Manchester United could target Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips as West Ham United have made a massive bid to sign him this January transfer window. He is currently out injured on the sidelines, but that has not stopped the Hammers from trying their chances to get him this month.

Phillips has been a long-term target for Man United, who are desperate for some midfield signings in their squad. They are already dealt a double blow due to their rivalry with Leeds, while him being a lifelong fan of the Whites does not help either. West Ham, on the other hand, want him this month itself to boost their chances of a top-four finish in the Premier League.

David Moyes’ side has lodged a huge £50million bid in an attempt to prise the 26-year-old away before others. He could also be a long-term replacement for Declan Rice, who is a transfer target for the Red Devils, Chelsea and Manchester City. Ralf Rangnick’s team could step in to counteract the interest from the former Man United manager.

Man Utd to strike back?

We have not made any midfield signings this month despite a clear need for strengthening in the defensive midfield area of the pitch. As such, we would be wise to target the Englishman to kill off two birds with one stone. We could definitely use a man like him in our squad; we also cannot allow Moyes to get their hands on a man of his quality.

It remains to be seen, however, if Leeds let go of their rivalry with us and put us on a level field with other suitors. Phillips formed a formidable partnership with Rice at the UEFA Euros for England, and West Ham recreating that at the London Stadium is an obvious problem for us.

The Hammers are contenders for a top-four place and have a very able squad at their disposal. With our club apparently reluctant to let Jesse Lingard join West Ham, considering them as a direct rival, it is clear that them adding Phillips would also be a blow for us.

But it is important to note that we are not yet rivalling West Ham for Phillips, but it is a possibility. Liverpool accelerated their plans to sign Luis Diaz in January once Tottenham Hotspur put in a bid for the Colombian forward, according to the Guardian.

Hopefully, that turns out to be the case with us as well. But with just a few hours remaining in the January window, there isn’t a lot of time left to retaliate.
