Transfer News: Burnley target move for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Burnley are plotting a move for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard in a sensational move this January transfer window. He was recently on Newcastle United’s radar as they tried to take him away on loan for the rest of the season, but to no avail.

Lingard has a contract with Man United which will expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United tried their hand at getting him this month, but his club strongly rejected the advances. It is understandable since both of them are in close quarters with the Red Devils in the Premier League table.

The Lancashire-based Burnley have now entered the fray and are monitoring the situation that has unravelled at Old Trafford. There is some belief that a move to Newcastle still happens, but it remains to be seen if that is the case. The Englishman is displeased with the way he has been treated by the Manchester club and has voiced his concerns to the squad.

Just get this done!

If we fail to facilitate a transfer for the 29-year-old, the situation within the dressing room could turn foul due to the club’s treatment of him. Demanding £15 million in total from the Magpies, largely by way of a relegation clause, was perplexing, to say the least, considering how he is in line to become a free agent next summer.

Now with Sean Dyche’s side entering the race, it is unknown whether there would be a change in the stance or not. However, there are some suggestions that the outrageous demands made by Ralf Rangnick’s team were intentional to kill off the interest from the Toons.

The sentiment surrounding the recent takeover of Eddie Howe’s side is stated to have played a part in our decision. If that is the case, perhaps we may be more open to doing business with the Clarets, but that cannot be said for certain. After all, they do not pose a threat to us, unlike Tottenham and West Ham, while they are not in the same boat as Newcastle, who now aim to become footballing giants in the near future.

Getting the services of the Man United ace would be a perfect opportunity for Dyche to get one back at the Magpies since they bought Chris Wood after activating his release clause. But time is running out if they really want their man, with just a little over 2 days left in the January window.

It would also offer us a final chance to do right by our academy graduate since the current relationship looks like it is in a bit of a mess. Let’s wait and see if Sean Dyche comes in with an offer in the coming days. Fans would hope that is the case as it could be in the best interest of all the parties involved.

It would also be a classy thing to do if we don’t completely jeopardize Lingard’s career because of our own insecurities. He has served us well for a long time and deserves to move to a club where he thinks he will flourish. At 29, it’s not like he has a very long career left ahead of him.
